FDA Issues Recall for Canned Coffee Products from Snapchill
On June 20, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a recall for canned coffee products made by Snapchill, a Wisconsin-based company. The recall affects all canned coffee products manufactured by the company within the past year.
Products Affected by the Recall
The FDA's recall notice states that the affected products were sold in a variety of metal can sizes ranging from 7 oz to 12 oz. The cans may have been labeled with various brand names, including:
- Doubleshot
- High Brew
- Morning Joe
- Perk Up
- Rise & Grind
- Wake Up
Potential Hazard
According to a June 17 press release from the FDA, Snapchill Coffee's current production process could lead to the growth of botulinum toxin in the canned coffee products. Botulinum toxin is a potentially fatal neurotoxin that can cause foodborne illness known as botulism.
Symptoms of botulism can include:
- Difficulty swallowing and breathing
- Blurred vision
- Speech problems
- Muscle weakness
- Nausea and vomiting
- Facial paralysis
Consumer Advice
